Healthcare Industry News > Salt Lake City; Prepaid health care plans as an alternative Salt Lake City; Prepaid health care plans as an alternative Some Salt Lake City physicians are taking their own approach to correcting two growing problems in the United States. One of those problems is the growing number of individuals who are uninsured or underinsured. The other problem is the shrinking number of primary care physicians. One of those physicians, Vic Wood, had to take action to save his own clinic. Although he has about 15,000 patient visits a year, the administrative costs associated with working with the health insurance plans were eating away his profits. As an alternative, Wood introduced prepaid health care plans. For a single monthly cost, patients can have unlimited access to doctors' visits, X-rays, blood work, and even generic drugs. The cost is $83 per person or $125 per family a month. Wood believes if he can sign 1,200 people up for the program then he will be able to sustain his clinic. However, he isn't just targeting private consumers. Several businesses have also signed on for the plan in order to provide more affordable health care to their workers. Utah governor Joe Manchin even asked Wood to work on a task force to deal with the state's uninsured issue. After about 6 months, the task force put together a legislative package that would include prepaid care. |
