Obama: Get Moving On Affordable Health Insurance Reform

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Even more important than the political process by which it was passed, it is essential to President Obama that affordable health insurance reform is executed effectively. A skeptical public is looking closely.

White House adviser Pete Rouse is in charge of getting the ball rolling. He must coordinate the efforts of many officials in various departments. Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services, is also playing a key role in regulating health insurance companies.

Health reform official Nancy-Ann DeParle will also stay on longer than expected, in order to ensure that the process of containing costs while simultaneously insuring millions of previously uninsured Americans goes as smoothly as possible.

Minorities More Likely To Lack Health Insurance

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

According to Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, racial and ethnic minorities are more likely to go without a health insurance plan than Caucasians.

What are the statistics?

  • 1-in-5 African Americans are uninsured
  • 1-in-3 Hispanic Americans are uninsured

There are multiple reasons for the disparity, but many blame lower income levels. The subsidies included in the healthcare reform bill should help people of all races afford individual and family health insurance. However, they won’t be available to the subset of Latinos who are undocumented immigrants.

Sebelius: Health Insurance Reform Will Be Clear and Transparent

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

In an attempt to reassure those worried about the recently passed health insurance reform legislation, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius claims that the reforms will be transparent and easy to understand.

Specifically, she pledged that her department would serve as a clearinghouse of information for confused consumers. The national and state regulators would be clear on the requirements, which is a tall order for a bill that is over 2,000 pages long.

Whether or not buying a health insurance plan actually becomes simpler under healthcare reform, we’re also here to help.

Beware of Health Insurance Scams!

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

The passage of healthcare reform has resulted in a lot of confusion. Unfortunately, that means that many consumers have the potential to fall prey to scammers.

Right now, people are going around door-to-door and claiming that there is a national open enrollment period for a health insurance plan. Many of the health plans they’re selling are fake: they won’t cover many of the uninsured with pre-existing conditions. Kathleen Sebelius has vowed that the Health and Human Services department will go after fraudulent sellers of health insurance. When the bulk of the reforms go into effect in 2014, door-to-door salespeople will probably not be used.

Also be on the lookout for TV ads that use news coverage of President Obama to imply his endorsement of similar “open enrollment” programs; I just saw one yesterday. There is no such time frame for individual or guaranteed issue health insurance! White House speeches and press conferences are in the public domain, so they are legally allowed to use the misleading footage. You may remember similar commercials regarding the mortgage crisis.

Health Insurance Companies Backtrack On Denying Children

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

Good news for those seeking family health insurance: despite concerns that the language in the healthcare reform bill could be interpreted as allowing health insurers to continue denying coverage to children with pre-existing conditions until 2014–going against President Obama’s own statements, the insurers have decided to extend that coverage regardless.

Initially, some health insurance companies’ lawyers claimed that the immediate effect of the legislation in the next six months would solely prevent insurers from refusing to cover pre-existing conditions of children they had already decided to underwrite. After public controversy and negative publicity, they have backtracked on that view. Instead, they have agreed to abide by the clear intent of the law: that kids should have access to affordable health insurance.

A letter from America’s Health Insurance Plans’ president Karen Ignagni assures Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius that they will not seek loopholes. Rather, they will follow complementary regulations soon to be released by Sebelius’ office. Families can now breathe a little easier.

The health insurance reform bill includes several provisions intended to increase consumer protections. One of those is an official federal government website set to launch soon. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius is tasked with its launch.

What will the new Website contain? According to the legislation, it must include:

  • a comparison of affordable health insurance premiums
  • information about co-payments
  • medical loss ratios: the percentage of premiums paid that go towards actual health care, as opposed to profit or administrative costs

The site is set to launch in July. We’ll keep you posted!

Health Official Slams Insurance Industry

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

The health industry is taking more heat today. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius called them out, telling executives they need to choose between short-term profits and a “sustainable health insurance market.”

Sebelius told members of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) to consider what customers were going through. “Can you blame them for thinking the system’s broken when their health insurance – which is supposed to protect them from exorbitant health costs – still forces them to pay thousands of dollars out of their pocket each year?”

White House officials have been mounting pressure on insurers in recent weeks. They are calling for medical insurance executives to release details on skyrocketing premium increases. Officials want to know where the money is going and how much of it is actually covering medical costs.

Sebelius says health insurers are working against Obama’s healthcare overhaul. Insurers have millions of dollars set aside to launch ads against health care reform legislation. “You can choose to continue your opposition to reform,” she said. “If you do and reform goes down in defeat, we know what will happen. By next March, premiums will be taking an even bigger bite out of Americans’ wages.”
