Healthcare Industry News > state health insurance and Medicaid continued to throw roadblocks up State health insurance and Medicaid continued to throw roadblocks up New Hampshire state representative Shawn Mickelonis is working on a bill that would provide children and adults with more treatment options in cases of life-threatening illnesses. The bill was inspired by the death of Carroll Ellsworth, a five year old boy suffering from neuroblastom - a form of cancer that attacks children's nervous systems.Carroll's parents sought out numerous types of treatment options for their son but the state health insurance and Medicaid continued to throw roadblocks up. Eventually, the family drained its entire savings and had to go on government assistance because of their increasing medical bills. The final straw was Medicaid's refusal to pay for a hospital stay for Carroll so he could participate in experimental treatment funded by the federal government. Friends and family members had to raise the money on their own. Mickelonis's bill would require both private and public insurance programs would be required to pay for these types of treatments for both adults and children who have life-threatening illnesses. The treatments would have to be first approved by a physician. If the bill is successful in New Hampshire, Mickelonis says he would like to work on passing a similar law at the federal level. |
