Healthcare Industry News > Healthcare plans & young people Healthcare plans & young peopleYoung people in the United States make up one of the largest groups of individuals without health insurance in the country, but the reason for their lack of healthcare is frequently debated. Critics believe these young people are too busy wasting their money on consumer goods than on investing in their long-term health. However, many young people argue the reason for their lack of health insurance is a lack of money and affordable options. One 24-year old woman was covered by her family's health insurance until this year. When she was dropped, she discovered that to purchase a high deductible plan she would have to pay nearly $100 a month even though she was relatively healthy. On a $15 per hour wage, she simply couldn't afford coverage that would require her to pay so much out-of-pocket, too. Part of the problem is also that fewer employers are offering health care benefits. A California Health Interview Study found that 75% of workers without a healthcare plan either could not included in their employer's health care plan or no such plan was being offered to employees. Even many college graduates are finding themselves without health insurance. After finishing school, 2 out of every 5 college graduates will end up without health insurance. |
