Healthcare Industry News > Mandatory health insurance in Colorado? Mandatory health insurance in Colorado?A survey of employers in six Colorado cities found most were in favor of requiring all citizens of the state to have health insurance but considerably less believed they had a responsibility to help fund lower priced insurance for the uninsured in the state. The survey, which was conducted by the Business Health Forum, found 62% of interviewed employers thought health insurance should be mandatory like auto insurance. The biggest reason is that the uninsured's unpaid health care costs are passed on in higher premiums to employers trying to provide health insurance benefits to their workers. Making health insurance mandatory would help reduce those costs. Eighty percent of the health insurance plans by considered in Colorado make health insurance mandatory. While the employers do favor mandatory health insurance, 85% believe government subsidies should be used to help the uninsured find plans in the private market while only 42% agree that they should be required to help pay for health insurance for their employees who do not have health insurance. The survey also found most employers - about 67% - thought their employees should not have to spend more than a certain percentage of their money on health insurance. An even larger percent - 91% - were in favor of protecting health insurance continuity so workers did not lose their insurance when they lost or changed jobs. |
