Healthcare Industry News > Massachusetts: sign up for health insurance by December 31st Massachusetts: sign up for health insurance by December 31st Massachusetts residents are facing a quickly approaching deadline. If they do not sign up for health insurance by December 31st, then they will lose their personal exemption - a total of $219 - when they file their state taxes. The penalty is part of the recently implemented law meant to insure every person in the state by mandating health coverage.Unfortunately, Mitt Romney's political campaign could be hurt by these penalties. Romney led the state when the bill was passed and his adversaries have tried to paint the state's health care as a government mandate. Also, criticism about the penalties could shed light on the similarities between his state's medical insurance plan and the one proposed by Democratic candidate Senator Clinton. Romney supported the penalties but has also criticized the mandate in Clinton's proposal even thought it's essentially the same. While low income families can receive health insurance for nearly nothing, everyone else in the state is required to purchase private health insurance. The state does offer subsidies, but a spokesman for the governor said "It is irresponsible to expect taxpayers to pay for your health care." As a result, the penalty for not having insurance increases yearly. |
