Many employers are looking for ways to decrease their costs and that can lead to important changes in workers' policies. Currently, only about 40% of workers take the time to either change or confirm their benefits package with their employer. The majority just "go with the flow." Premium increases are a major change being felt by more employees. When employers are charged more for health insurance costs, they often pass those additional fees onto their workers. However, premiums are only one type of change. Some employers are taking a closer look at dependents and spouses who are being covered on their plans. Some workers are guilty of adding non-eligible dependents on their insurance plans, for example. If those "dependents" are discovered, workers will be required to pay back every penny of coverage spent. Other employers are requiring proof that a spouse cannot be enrolled in their own employer's heath insurance plan before allowing them to be included on the worker's plan. Health savings accounts are another option being promoted by more businesses but few workers are signing up for these programs.
