The best way to try to control costs is to try to get away from fee for service. Pay doctors for controlling a person's diabetes over a few months rather than paying the doctor for EVERY SINGLE visit the person makes. I absolutely hate it when my doctors tell me to come back for another appointment. All they have to do is spend more time with me but of course I know if I come back, they get more $$ out of me. I'd much rather have a single-payer system with the option for people to buy private health insurance if they want it. I'm sure people are sick of ever increasing premiums from private health insurers. Why not give the people an option? What a complicated issue.
