Healthcare Industry News > Best health care system Best health care systemFred Thompson, actor and presidential candidate, says "America has the best health care system in the world." However, some argue that the facts do not support such claims. The number of uninsured Americans increases by more than 2 million people each year. In addition, the costs of health care per person in the United States are higher than in any other industrialized country and most measures of health, including infant mortality and longevity, rank the country near the bottom. Compared to Medicare which spends all but 2 to 3% of premiums on actual health care, private insurers only spend 60 to 80% on actual patients' benefits. They also must pay stockholders who want a return on their investments in the company. Filing insurance claims has also contributed to the rising costs of health insurance in the United States. Utah uses a standardized claim form and has one of the lowest cost increases in all fifty states. Thompson and other opponents of a single-payer health care system, including many presidential candidates on both sides of the political spectrum, say switching from a private system would mean patients would no longer get to choose their doctors. However, people who do have HMOs or PPOs are limited in their choice of doctors, too, if they want their benefits to kick in. The bottom line is that most people and even most candidates would agree that the issue of health care in the U. S. is more complex than Thompson's statement suggests. |
