Healthcare Industry News > BadgerCare Plus to ensure health care coverage for all children BadgerCare Plus to ensure health care coverage for all childrenWisconsin is planning a dramatic overhaul of their Medicaid program to extend health care coverage to a greater number of children beginning on February 1, 2008. The biggest change will be an increase in the income eligibility requirements. Plus, red tape issues will be minimized so it will be easier for families to sign up for the program. All of these changes are part of a larger goal: having no one under the age of 18 uninsured. The program, known as BadgerCare Plus, will provide coverage for children through HMOs and will make signing up for the program easier thanks to the participation of schools and the use of the Internet. About 98,000 children were uninsured in 2006 and the Badger Care Plus changes should be able to extend coverage to just under a third of those kids by June 2009. Although nearly all families in Wisconsin will be eligible to participate in the program, middle income families will be required to pay a premium ranging from $10 to $68.25 per child each month. The government estimates the initial phase of the program's expansion will cost around $17.4 million and will be paid for from money saved by making the health care plan more efficient. |
