Healthcare Industry News > Washington State Health Insurance premium increase being investigated Washington State Health Insurance premium increase being investigatedIn Western Washington State, some families have received an unpleasant surprise this holiday season. When they received information about their next year's health insurance premiums, some found their premiums were being increased by 30% or more. One couple were shocked to open their bill to find an increase from $552 to $725 per month. That's an increase of $173!The family believes the increase is a result of an insurance referendum passed in November requiring expanded mental health care benefits is the reason for the dramatic rise. However, their health insurance provider disagrees. They claim their 22% increase was announced prior to the referendum vote and is caused by higher medical costs for treatments, prescriptions, and health technology. Washington Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler believes he should have the legal authority to investigate these rate hikes and ensure that companies are justified in making these dramatic increases. His office had that authority until six years ago. Now he is going to ask the state legislature to restore it. |
