Healthcare Industry News > Vermont's new Catamount health insurance program Vermont's new Catamount health insurance program Vermont's new Catamount health insurance program is already generating a steady number of applicants even though the marketing campaign for the program isn't yet underway. The program is aimed at providing health insurance for many of the state's 65,000 uninsured individuals. The state began accepting applications on October 1 and in just 10 days already received 500 applications.Although Catamount's official launch isn't scheduled until November, state residents can already apply either by phone or through the Green Mountain Care web site. However, some reports have found the application process to be a bit difficult - something that should be fixed by November 1st. Despite the lofty goals of the program, critics worry that the premiums for the plan may not be affordable for many people. A single person can expect to pay just under $400 a month for coverage while family health insurance would cost more. Anyone in the state earning less than 300% of the federal poverty limit would receive some state assistance to cover those costs. Another sticking point for critics is the one year waiting period. To be eligible, applicants must have been without health insurance for at least one year, although some exceptions - job loss, loss of coverage from parents, etc. - do apply. Read source article |
