Healthcare Industry News > Vermont: New Health Care Idea Vermont: New Health Care IdeaVermont is working on a revolutionary new health care idea - one that will provide additional options for the uninsured. The plan, called the Vermont Hospital Security Plan, would develop a statewide budget to pay for all hospital care at 14 non-profit hospitals in the state. In this way, the state would create a single-payer system for health care, at least when it comes to hospital care.Although this plan was first suggested in 2007, it seems to be gaining momentum in 2008. Take Back Vermont Healthcare, a group of single-payer advocates, is lobbying heavily for passage of the new plan which they say would cut medical insurance premiums by 40%. Those cuts would be a result of the insured no longer needing coverage for hospital visits. Plan creators say it would cost around $710 million a year and that would be paid for by tax increases, but since the taxpayers would also be saving on their health insurance some of that savings would simply be shifted to pay the new taxes. Governor James Douglas believes lowering the cost of health insurance premiums is critical, but he does not support the Vermont Hospital Security Plan because it requires an increase in taxes. |
