Healthcare Industry News > University of Utah assisting to identify genetic markers for common diseases University of Utah assisting to identify genetic markers for common diseasesSalt Lake City, Utah's LineaGen - a genetics firm - and the University of Utah are working together to identify genetic markers for common diseases so individuals could be tested for their genetic propensity for these diseases. The first diseases to be explored include autism, multiple sclerosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and osteoporosis.LineaGen hopes to create diagnostic tests for these markers. Part of the company's research will involve exploring the Utah Population Database's 10 million records which can help them spot inheritance issues because the database is multigenerational. The state also boasts "extensive genealogical histories" which will further aid the research. By identifying these markers early, LineaGen believes they can help medical professionals provide personalized care for patients. A big concern, however, is that such research could cause insurance companies to discriminate against some applicants on the basis of these markers. While LineaGen officials believe such a use is unlikely because most of the population carries markers for at least one serious health condition, the U. S. Congress is considering passing a law to prohibit that type of discrimination. |
