Healthcare Industry News > University mandates student health insurance University mandates student health insurance East Carolina University is considering a change that would affect up to 40% of its full-time students in the fall 2008 semester. The university is considering making health insurance purchases mandatory for all uninsured students – most of whom come from low-income families. The cost of the policies would $700 per year which is lower than what students are currently paying for coverage through ECU (premiums for 2006-2007 were just over $1,100 per student). While some on campus resist the idea of being forced to purchase health insurance, mandatory coverage does offer some benefits. For one, the costs are reduced. Premiums were typically higher because the students who opted for the coverage usually needed it the most and ECU ended up paying out more than it earned in premiums. In 2003-2004, 19 students accounted for more than $435,000 in claims – a whopping 90% of all the claims filed that year. By spreading the costs out among more students, the premiums are reduced. Plus, since the coverage is mandatory it can be covered by financial aid – that’s not an option when the plans are offered voluntarily. The proposed coverage would include emergency care, surgery, annual pap smears, athletic injuries, emergency trips home for foreign students, and more. Plus, the health insurance would continue during the summer months and would be extended three months past their graduation date. |
