Healthcare Industry News > Uninsured residents in Howard County Maryland Uninsured residents in Howard County Maryland Officials in Howard County Maryland have brainstormed their own approach to dealing with the growing number of uninsured Americans in their part of the state. For a small fee, uninsured residents of the county would be able to access a doctor or clinic for their health care needs. The medical facilities would form a type of medical club similar to Sam's Club. The program will be paid for by organizations, businesses, and the existing health care budget. Health insurance and employer contributions would be not mandatory in the county's plan.A similar program is already being used in San Francisco for city residents who have no health insurance and who don't qualify for Medicaid or Medicare. However, the San Francisco plan does require contributions for large employers but that aspect of the plan is being challenged in a court battle. The county is also trying to find ways to encourage the enrollment of more children in the state's SCHIP program. About 5,000 children are uninsured in the county and many would be eligible for the program. |
