Texas-based MEGA Life & Health Insurance Company could be facing up to $500,000 in fines after being charged with misleading almost 3,000 customers in Delaware. Matt Denn, the Delaware Insurance Commissioner, reported that for approximately 18 months between 2002 and 2004 MEGA was driving customers into more costly individual health plans when they were eligible for group coverage instead. However, MEGA Life did more than that according to the report. They also charged additional fees for everything from doctor's visits to chemotherapy and failed to offer the policies required by Delaware. Some of their marketing practices were viewed as misleading as well. Other states have also begun to scrutinize MEGA Life's practices. The company which markets primarily to self-employed individuals faces a fine of at least $100,000. MEGA Life has two years to make the 18 pages worth of corrections mandated by Delaware. If they fail to make those corrections by the deadline, they will be required to pay the full $500,000 fine. The company released a statement on October 10th claiming it had already made many of the corrections and was confident they would be required to pay no more than the original $100,000.
