Healthcare Industry News > Democrats fight for State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) Democrats fight for State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) Congress agreed to extend funding for the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) for another month while negotiations over the program’s five-year future continue. The action came once lawmakers realized no conclusion would be reached before the Thanksgiving holiday. Now participants in the program have one more month of coverage. A previous short-term funding reprieve was set to expire at the end of November. The debate over SCHIP is that many in Congress want to expand the program by $35 billion over the next five years so more uninsured children can receive coverage. Those increased costs would be covered by a significant tax hike on cigarettes. Twice the bill has been drawn up and both versions have been vetoed by President Bush who objects to the funding increase and the tax increase. A new bill is currently being hammered out, but Democrats promise not to back down on the funding increase which would allow 4 million more children to be added to the program. If Bush vetoes the next attempt, Democrats would need to find an additional 15 Republicans to change their vote in order to override the third veto. |
