Healthcare Industry News > Smokers targeted as businesses cut their health care benefit costs Smokers targeted as businesses cut their health care benefit costsSmokers are being targeted as a prime way for businesses to cut their health care benefit costs. At CFI Westgate Resort, employees are required to be non-smoking both on and off the job. Other employers, such as Florida Hospital and Lockheed Martin, have banned smoking on the property. Still other companies are charging smokers more for their employer-provided health insurance. That extra fee currently ranges from $30 per pay period at JP Morgan Chase to $100 per month at Tribune Co.Although employers have been reluctant to incorporate these types of changes, a spokesperson for the Florida Health Care Coalition believes employers just can't afford to "subsidize bad behavior" any longer and now have "to make the individual pay for the bad habit." The question is how far does this line of logic go. With obesity becoming a major health care problem, overweight employees could one day end up paying more, too. Risk takers who love hang gliding or parachuting may also be targeted because an accident could cost their employer thousands. The bigger issue is how much control your employer should have over your private life. In some states, laws prevent this type of intrusion but that is not the case in Florida. |
