Healthcare Industry News > Shift in Clinton's Health Plan A Shift in Clinton's Health Plan Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has admitted the goal of her health care reform idea is to provide universal coverage by mandating that all Americans purchase health insurance. Originally, she had promoted her idea as merely a business-friendly model that would appeal to both political wings. Now to combat opponent Senator Barack Obama she has claimed his ideas would leave 15 million people uninsured. Obama’s plan would focus on reducing health care costs but would only mandate coverage for children. John Edwards, another Democratic presidential candidate, promotes a plan similar to Clinton’s and has also attacked Obama’s proposal because it does not guarantee that everyone will have coverage. However, Obama argues that most people do not have health insurance because they cannot afford to pay for a policy. By reducing costs, health care would be available to more Americans and to their employers. As he pointed out in a recent appearance at the Council Bluffs high school in Iowa, “Cost is the number one reason that 47 million Americans do not have health insurance.” Despite the criticisms of Obama’s plans, Clinton has yet to explain how she would enforce the mandate. One idea is to garnish the wages of people who fail to purchase health insurance. In Massachusetts, a similar approach to medical insurance is being tried, yet thousands in the state are still uninsured which may make others wonder how such a plan would succeed nationwide.
