Healthcare Industry News > San Francisco New Health Care Plan San Francisco New Health Care PlanAt the end of 2007, a federal judge in San Francisco said the provision in the state's new health care plan that would require employers to pay a fee if they do not provide medical insurance to employees violated the law. On January 3rd, an appeals court heard an emergency request from the city so they could roll out their new plan. The city's lawyer asked to stay the federal judge's decision during the appeal process so they could begin helping insure approximately 46,000 citizens. The Healthy San Francisco plan was actually launched in July 2007 but initially only provided health care to the poorest residents. In less than six months, 6,500 people had already signed up for the program. Healthy San Francisco is a citywide plan that provides health care to uninsured residents regardless of their income or immigration status. The program does not provide any coverage outside of the city limits. More than 80,000 people in the city are uninsured currently and the cost of bringing coverage to those people is estimated to be around $200 million. To fund such a program, employers would have to pay $1.17 to $1.76 per hour per employee (depending on the number of employees) if they did not provide health care. |
