Healthcare Industry News > Health Insurance Not a Big Concern for Many Republican Voters Health Insurance Not a Big Concern for Many Republican VotersRepublicans aren't as worried about the uninsured as Democrats, according to a study conducted in November 2007 by the Harvard School of Public Health and the Kaiser Family Foundation. The recently released results say that only half as many Republicans "want to expand health insurance coverage for the uninsured." The survey included phone interviews with nearly 1,200 voters who lived in states where presidential primaries and caucuses were held in January or February, including South Carolina and Iowa. Of those polled, just over 500 claimed they were likely to vote in the Republican primaries. While only 8% of Democrats were in favor of leaving the current health insurance system untouched, more than one-quarter of surveyed Republicans voiced that opinion. Around 23% of Republicans did say they supported changes aimed at providing health care to the uninsured even if it resulted in higher spending. In comparison, 65% of Democrats said they would pay substantially more if it would result in universal coverage. Over 40% of Republicans said they would support a bill that provided coverage to at least some of the uninsured. |
