Healthcare Industry News > Bill Would Prevent Insurance from Being a Factor in Organ Transplants Bill Would Prevent Insurance from Being a Factor in Organ TransplantsA new bill being proposed in New Hampshire would level the playing field for insured and uninsured patients needing organ transplants. If successful, it would be the first bill of its kind in the United States. The impetus for the bill was Nicholas Currier. The 21-year old Currier suffered from Wilson's Disease which causes the body's liver to retain copper instead of releasing it into the bile. The copper eventually causes damage to the liver. As a result, Currier desperately needed a liver transplant but because he had no health insurance the hospital refused to place him on the organ waiting list. Currier died on January 20th. The bill was sponsored by Republican Senator Joseph Kenney from Wakefield, New Hampshire who was shocked by Currier's story. Kenney said, "It's rich versus poor, and that's not the way our society should respond to people who need an organ to survive." Lobbyists for the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, the only hospital in the state that performs transplants, insists that all of those people who need organs are placed on the list. Insurance concerns are only raised later. |
