Healthcare Industry News > Online Health Insurance Price Lists Spark Conversations Between Patients, Physicians Online Health Insurance Price Lists Spark Conversations Between Patients, PhysiciansIn an effort to generate conversations between patients and physicians about reducing the costs of their treatments, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina has started posting their pricing lists online. The lists include hundreds of services and their costs so consumers will have a clear idea of what they can expect to pay for a coronary bypass or a pap smear. With high-deductible plans becoming an increasingly popular alternative, consumers need to have a more clear idea of these costs so they can make health care decisions. Insurance companies are hoping that the price list will encourage patients to ask physicians about alternative and more affordable treatment methods in order to control their medical costs. Not everyone thinks the idea is on the right track. Some argue that forcing patients to decide if they are in the financial position to afford an MRI is not an effective health care system. Instead, the insurance companies also need to be doing more to keep their costs and their profits under control. |
