Healthcare Industry News > Nataline Sarkisyan died after her health insurance company refused to pay for a liver transplant Nataline Sarkisyan died after her health insurance company refused to pay for a liver transplantNataline Sarkisyan died on December 21st after her health insurance company refused to pay for a liver transplant. The seventeen year old already suffered from leukemia. Cigna Corp, the family's insurance provider, refused to cover the transplant because it was considered experimental. Cigna changed its minds after protests outside its office took place, but the girl died just hours later before the procedure could be performed. The family is now planning a lawsuit and possible criminal charges against Cigna which they claim "maliciously killed" the teenager. A legal expert did not believe criminal charges would be provable, however. Nataline had suffered from leukemia since she was 14. After a bone marrow transplant from her brother just before Thanksgiving, her liver failed from a complication and she entered a vegetative state. She was taken off life support and died. Doctors had asked Cigna to reconsider their refusal because these transplants have offered other patients an additional six months of life in about 65% of the cases. The problem is that the medication needed for a successful liver transplant can actually worsen the cancer by further suppressing the immune system. The head of a liver transplant program at the University of Wisconsin at Madison believed a liver transplant for a leukemia patient "would be futile." |
