Healthcare Industry News > Michigan: partners not being covered by health benefits Michigan: partners not being covered by health benefitsSome couples in Ingham County, Michigan may soon find one of their partners not being covered by health benefits any longer. Currently, county employees' health care benefits can be extended to their same-sex partners. However, some in the county argue the practice should be ended immediately. The move is a result of the state marriage amendment Michigan passed three years ago. The county's lawyers have told them the practice is unconstitutional and has to be ended. If they want to continue offering the benefits, then all domestic partners regardless of their sexual orientation would have to be covered by the benefits. County Commission Chair Marc Thomas says they are looking into the financial feasibility of doing just that, but since Ingham County is already facing a $3 million deficit, the outcome does look bleak for workers such as Joe Darby and his partner who is seriously ill and relies on the insurance. However, no decision will be made until 2008, and the commissioners are hopeful they can come up with a fair way to deal with the issue. |
