Michigan families spend big on health care

A recent study commissioned by FamiliesUSA found that 500,000 of Michigan's residents were paying more than 25% of their family income for health care. Those health care expenses included premiums, deductibles, co-payments, and prescription costs. Surprisingly, 80% of those families had health insurance. Another 1.5 million residents spend between 10 and 25% of their total income on health care expenses. According to FamiliesUSA, people in the U. S. should not have to spend more than 10%.

The results of a similar survey conducted in 2000 were compared to the current results. The findings show an additional 600,000 Michigan residents are paying over 10% of their income for health care today as were in 2000.

State Senator Debbie Stabenow was shocked by the findings which she believes suggest the United States should be looking at a single-payer health care system such as the one used in Canada. Michigan residents, such as self-employed Brad Gilreath, agree. Gilreath was hit hard by insurance rate increases, but he also has a brother who is a Canadian citizen.
