Healthcare Industry News > Massachusetts Universal Health Care Massachusetts Universal Health CareLast year, Massachusetts became one of the first states to propose universal health care for everyone in the state by mandating health insurance. Through the plan, all residents of the states are required to purchase medical insurance. If they do not, then they are forced to pay tax penalties. For 2007, the penalties were $219 - essentially the tax filer lost his or her individual tax exemption. The penalties won't stay that low for long, they are expected to increase dramatically by the end of 2008. Tax payers up to 26 years of age will pay $672 in penalties while tax payers over 27 years old will be charged $912. These penaltie amounts were determined by taking half of the cost of the lowest priced health care plans available through the Commonwealth Health Insurance Connector Authority. Many Massachusetts' residents will also qualify for subsidized insurance. Individuals earning $30,636 and a family of four earning up to $61,956 a year can have a portion of their health care costs covered by the government. People eligible for these subsidies will not be penalized. According to Henry Dormitzer, the state's revenue Commissioner, almost 300,000 Massachusetts residents were insured since the passage of the law. Read original story in www.boston.bizjournals.com |
