Healthcare Industry News > Out-of-Pocket Mammogram Costs Cause Some Women Not to Get One Out-of-Pocket Mammogram Costs Cause Some Women Not to Get OneA study conducted by Brown University found many women are not getting their annual mammograms because of high out-of-pocket costs. Researchers looked at the mammogram rates for over 360,000 women who have Medicare managed plans. According to the results, a co-payment of more than $10 can be enough to discourage some women from having the procedure done, even though it could save their lives. Breast cancer is the number two killer of women in the United States, and mammograms have been proven to be powerful tools in the fight against that cancer thanks to its ability to detect tumors early. However, more insurance plans are expecting women to pay a portion of those tests and that is causing problems for many women. In 2004, one in every nine women had to pay at least 10% of their mammogram expenses out-of-pocket. While that may not seem like much, those costs added to the increasing costs of premiums and other health-related expenses may be daunting. Some argue that the real concern is not that women are being asked to foot part of the bill, but that women do not understand the importance of mammograms in saving their lives even if it only means saving $10 |
