Make health care affordable and available to all

Presidential candidates, such as Senator Hillary Clinton, may be promoting private health insurance solutions and mandates for the public but she and other members of Congress receive state-subsidized health benefits. While tax money already funds their health insurance, other programs also receive tax dollars to provide health care, including Medicaid, Medicare, and the Veteran's Administration. However, many of the candidates do not believe these benefits should be extended to all Americans.

On the one hand, Republican candidates want to reduce health care costs by reforming medical malpractice laws, but a 2004 report by Congress found that malpractice costs only account for 2% of all health care spending. Other proposals, such as tax credits and enticements for consumers to "shop around" for coverage, do not address the reality that many Americans can not afford health care and do not know what reasonable insurance costs should be.

Democrats favor mandating private health insurance. However, such a proposal must also include ways of keeping costs affordable and of ensuring that all plans purchased are include sufficient coverage. Of the candidates, Dennis Kucinich has been one of the few who recommends switching from the current system to a non-profit national system that provides health care for all Americans.
