Indiana Bill May Increase Insurance Spending on Prosthetics How much should insurance companies be required to pay towards prosthetic limbs? That's a question being asked by Indiana Senate Bill 269. The bill would require all insurance companies to pay $10,000 a year towards the cost of prosthetics. Evan Light, a young Mishawake amputee, and his family spoke to the Senate about the bill and how it would help them.Prosthetics are costly. Families can spend up to $25,000 per year on the artificial limbs, but many health insurance companies pay only a small fraction of that amount. The Light's coverage, for example, pays no more than $4,000 per year. If the bill passes, the family could save an additional $6,000 per year and that amount would be adjusted for inflation periodically. Light's family argues that without the prosthetic their son would end up in a wheelchair and would be limited in terms of his activities. As a result, he could become obese and suffer serious health care problems, such as diabetes, which could cost more in care in the long run.
