Healthcare Industry News > Illegal Immigrants and Mandated Health Insurance Illegal Immigrants and Mandated Health InsuranceIf Hillary Clinton or John Edwards are successful in their bids for the White House and succeed in passing a health insurance mandate, should that mandate also apply to illegal immigrants? That's a growing question in places such as California and Texas where the immigration problem is most pressing. Currently, employers do not offer benefits to these workers and are not required to pay for their injuries on the job. Both Clinton's and Edwards' proposals would not extend the mandate to include non-legal residents of the country. Currently, illegal immigrants are not eligible for any types of government programs, including Medicaid, nor are they protected by the same laws that cover legal workers in the country. The health care they do receive is often provided by volunteers, such as Julia Grenier. Grenier is a retired nurse who purchases medical supplies from her own money in order to treat individuals trying to get work at the Plano Day Labor Center in Texas. Illegal immigrants want to have the option of purchasing health insurance through their employers. However, legal residents believe extending such benefits to non-legal residents would be unfair. |
