Healthcare Industry News > Health care in presidential election Health Care emerges as a major issue in presidential election Health care has emerged as a major issue during the 2008 presidential election campaign because almost everyone can agree the system needs to be improved. However, the candidates are busy offering their own ideas on how to best fix the problems. At the center of that problem are the 46.5 million Americans who did not have health care in 2006, including 3 million people in Florida alone. Plus, businesses have been hit hard with premium increases in recent years and fewer are opting to provide health care benefits to their employees which could make the uninsured problem even worse. Democrats are moving toward more government involvement in the industry. Both Clinton and Edwards suggest mandating health insurance just as auto insurance is currently required. Obama, however, wants to move toward reducing costs so health insurance is more affordable. Republicans, in general, believe market-based solutions are the best option, although some would provide tax credits or breaks to help people afford insurance coverage. Organizations, such as the AARP, are working together to encourage politicians to take a bipartisan approach to solving the problems of the current health care system. |
