Healthcare Industry News > Health care cost increasing faster than workers earnings Health care cost increasing faster than workers earningsSmall business owners and their employees are facing tough choices and financial strain thanks to the increasing costs of health care. Already only 45% of businesses employing less than 9 people provide health benefits. Part of the reason is that balancing a decent wage with the cost of health benefits while also earning a profit is a challenge. Frank Manzo, owner of Computer Models Corp, pays workers $25 an hour to work the help desk. He charges clients $35 an hour for the service, but the cost of providing health care for his workers in 2008 equals $12 an hour. That makes health care a losing proposition for his business.Even though health care cost increases seem to have slowed, they are still increasing faster than workers' earning and as the bill gets higher for employers more of those health care costs are being passed on to the workers. In small businesses, the problem is worse because many companies are still seeing double digit increases. Several small companies in Philadelphia saw their costs rise 15 to 20%. |
