Many of these individuals have either retired early or have lost their jobs prematurely because of corporate downsizing. Formerly, these individuals have faced a difficult time acquiring individual health insurance because of their age and health conditions. One reason more insurance companies may be looking towards this group is its size. In the U.S., 78 million people are between the ages of 43 and 61. That represents one-fourth of the entire country’s population. Plus, only 33% of employers in 2007 are now offering retiree benefits which means more of these baby boomers are going to be needing health insurance before they reach Medicare age. Another reason is that baby boomers often have the means to pay for their own insurance. Their median income was $60,000 which was almost $20,000 more than the average for all adult families. Despite this new willingness to offer plans to baby boomers, some in the age group are still finding it a challenge. For example, some plans may not provide the prescription coverage necessary for many in this age group. Others may not be able to afford the often steep premiums.
