Healthcare Industry News > Health Insurance Research by the Employment Policies Institute Health Insurance Research by the Employment Policies InstituteTwo recent reports produced insight on the problem of health insurance in the United States. The Employment Policies Institute supported this research concerning the ramifications of mandating employer provided health care benefits to employees. The research was conducted by two economists from Cornell University. According to their findings, forcing employers to include these benefits or pay a fine would actually have destructive consequences for the individuals needing health care the most. Because of the rising costs of medical insurance, employers may end up having to cut jobs and hours in order to stay ahead. That means many low-income workers would still not receive medical benefits because they would be jobless. Additionally, the Employment Policies Institute stressed that many of the working poor earn too much to qualify for the benefits provided by the mandates. A separate report was produced by the Economic Policy Institute. Surprisingly, they agreed that employers should not be forced to provide health care to workers. Instead, they suggested removing health insurance from the job market altogether and instead offer minimum coverage to all citizens through a public sector program. |
