Healthcare Industry News > Mixed opinions on the handling of the State Children's Health Insurance Program Mixed opinions on the handling of the State Children's Health Insurance ProgramA recent poll of Americans found mixed opinions on the handling of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) bill. Although just over half of those polls voiced greater confidence in Democratic leaders on the issue, about the same percentage agreed with President Bush's view that the majority of benefits should go to families earning less than $41,000 (for a family of four). The Democrat's bill would have raised the cut off to $62,000 for a family of four. The poll results did not independent health policy consultant Robert Laszewski who believes most of the people siding with the president are unaware of how expensive health insurance is and how much middle class families are struggling to cover the costs. Mark McClellan, who once headed the Medicaid and Medicare federal programs, believes most Americans do recognize that struggle but aren't convinced the government should pay those costs. The poll of just under 1,100 individuals also found 55% were either "Very Concerned" or "Somewhat Concerned" that passing the SCHIPs bill would have caused middle class families to give up their private health insurance. |
