Only 17 votes were needed in the House to reach the 290 necessary for an override. Heller was the only representative from Nevada to vote against the SCHIP legislation.Heller's vote was attacked as blocking health insurance for children, but Heller is already working on plans to provide health insurance coverage in other ways. He is co-sponsoring a plan to reinstate SCHIP for five years as well as to create tax credits for low-income families who must pay for their own health insurance and a grant program that will give states money to create programs for insuring more of their citizens. A press release from Heller explained he supported health care change that did not include increased taxes, aid to illegal immigrants, and the extension of SCHIP benefits to families in higher income brackets. |
