Healthcare Industry News > Health Insurance Problems for Retirees Health Insurance Problems for Retirees New health insurance plans are in the works to help pre-Medicare individuals find medical insurance, although the costs may continue to be prohibitive for many. One healthy 56 year old is being rejected from coverage or is being asked to pay higher premiums because he used to be a smoker – 16 years ago. He, like many people his age, are convinced their difficulties stem from health insurance providers who don’t want to take on customers who are going to cost them more in benefits. According to the AARP Public Policy Institute, about 14 percent of Americans between the ages of 50 and 64 are uninsured. Unfortunately, this group is too young to apply for Medicare but is at the age when many people begin developing health problems that require medical attention. Because acquiring individual health insurance requires going through an underwriting process and having one’s health background reviewed, it can be difficult to acquire for this age group – most of which have had a few medical problems along the way. For individuals in this vulnerable age group, the best way to find coverage is to talk to brokers who know which new plans are available for them and to be aware of their state’s guidelines when it comes to health insurance. |
