Healthcare Industry News > Health Insurance Kentucky Residents Health Insurance Kentucky ResidentsGovernor Steve Beshear pledged during his campaign to bring health insurance to tens of thousands of Kentucky residents. However, it is unlikely that he will be able to be true to that promise unless some dramatic changes occur. Currently, 30% of Kentucky residents depend on the government for their health insurance and about 13% are uninsured. In order to achieve Beshear's original promise, more tax revenue or federal assistance would be needed. For example, if the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) extension had been passed instead of being vetoed by the President then the state would have had the additional funds necessary. Another problem for the state is that the Kentucky Medicaid program has a $389 million deficit. To add more people to the program, Beshears would have to find enough money to cover that deficit as well as the money to cover the additions. One possible solution is casino gambling which the House Health and Welfare Committee is trying to get on the ballot. If it can pass, then an additional $500 million could be available for the government in future years. Another possible idea - a cigarette tax increase of 30 cents per pack - was ruled out by Beshear, even though many advocates argue the extra $100 million a year could help provide health care for more Kentuckians and could prevent young people from smoking. |
