Healthcare Industry News >Health Insurance Companies Rate Doctors Health Insurance Companies Rate Doctors Some health insurance providers are giving consumers more information in order to help them select the best physicians for their needs in that provider’s network. The insurance companies have begun rating physician performance and letting consumers know, usually with a small star mark, which doctors stack up and which do not. The ratings efforts are part of the insurance companies’ attempts to connect physician pay to their performance. Physicians, however, are angry by the move because the stars are not accompanied by explanations and because no information about how these ratings are compiled is available. Beginning in October 2007, several health insurance companies agreed to use a doctor-rating system created with the assistance of the American Medical Association. The ratings are based not just on cost-efficiency, the calculation methods used must be revealed, and physicians are given a way to appeal ratings with which they do not agree. Although this agreement was reached in New York, three of the insurers included in the deal have decided to implement the system nationwide. |
