Healthcare Industry News > Options for low-income uninsured Americans Options for low-income uninsured AmericansCharitable clinics, such as Good Samaritan Health Center in Atlanta, have become one of the few options for low-income uninsured Americans. In Georgia, for example, 1.7 million people have no health insurance. When they face illnesses or health problems, they must go to costly emergency rooms instead of to a more affordable doctor. However, these clinics provide low-cost health care often using a sliding scale fee based on a patient's income. In Atlanta, about 100 similar clinics exist. Good Samaritan is still so busy that it must turn away about 300 patients every week. Part of the problem is that health care costs seem to be increasing faster in Atlanta than elsewhere in the U. S. City employers saw their health insurance costs rise by 10.7% compared to 5.1% in other parts of the country. From 2000 to 2006, these clinics have seen a 40% increase in the number of uninsured patients they see. Between 2003 and 2006, the number of uninsured patients being seen in emergency rooms has risen by 205,000. Charitable clinics don't just provide health care to the poor. The working poor, illegal immigrants, and the homeless can also seek medical treatment in the clinics. |
