Healthcare Industry News > Clinton, Obama clashing on health Clinton, Obama clashing on healthAs the primaries draw near, the battle between Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barrack Obama over how best to provide health care to the millions of uninsured Americans is heating up. The biggest different between the candidates is whether to require all Americans to purchase private health coverage. Clinton would mandate health coverage and would penalize Americans who do not buy a plan. Other Democratic candidates, including John Edwards and Bill Richardson, also want to include these mandates in their plans. Obama rejects mandates for all Americans (he does support mandates for children) but wants to find ways to make private health insurance more affordable.Clinton argues that Obama's plan would not provide universal coverage; only through mandates would every American have insurance. Obama argues that controlling costs is critical and that other types of insurance mandates, such as automobile insurance, have not resulted in universal coverage. Financial experts point out that a mandate is useless if steps aren't taken to make health insurance more affordable. |
