Healthcare Industry News > Health Care Scams to Watch For Health Care Scams to Watch ForWith the high price of health insurance in the news daily, it's no surprise that insurance regulators are facing another huge problem: medical insurance scams. Most of these scams are targeting people looking for individual health insurance or coverage for small business owners. A similar wave of scams rocked the U. S. between 2001 and 2003 and cost consumers more than $85 million. One of the most common scams is discount cards. The cards often promise discounts of up to 15% on medical services, but they are rarely legitimate. The ones that are offer much lower savings. Another one to consider avoiding is insurance policies that only provide coverage for serious illnesses, such as cancer. While there are policies available like this, they are normally attached to other types of insurance policies. Faith-based plans are also often surprisingly bad news. The idea is that these plans offer low price premiums to their members but they often come up with strict standards, such as no smoking and no premarital sex. Plus, there's no transparency so consumers rarely really know what they're getting for their money. Read original story in www.forbes.com |
