Healthcare Industry News > Universal Health Care in San Francisco Universal health care in San FranciscoHealthy San Francisco is the first city-level attempt to provide universal health care for its citizens. However, that is not its only distinction. Additionally, the city’s program is the first to take into consideration cultural differences in the services provided. The program, which is available to any person living in the city who does not qualify for other low income medical care programs, includes 22 clinics dispersed through different cultural areas of the city. Each clinic offers services that would appeal to the demographic in its area. For example, the clinic in Chinatown offers acupuncture services and is promoted through television ads starring Asian actors being run on Chinese-language television channels. In other clinics, staff members trained to speak in the languages of the respective cultures are employed. However, the cultural focus isn’t the only difference between Healthy San Francisco and other programs. The payment structure is also unique. Members are responsible for paying premiums based on a sliding scale fee as well as co-payments. Once these fees are paid, however, they are entitled to any type of medical treatment considered most appropriate for them. Clinics and their staff are paid a salary not a fee per patient. The program is estimated to cost $200 million and is being paid for by the fees, other public funds, and contributions from employers. Read original story in www.sfgate.com |
