Healthcare Industry News > Gallup polls reported conflicting findings about how Americans feel about health care Gallup polls reported conflicting findings about how Americans feel about health careTwo recent Gallup polls reported conflicting findings about how Americans feel about health care. This fall, a study done by the polling organization found majorities of Americans favored making significant changes to health care in the country. For example, 76% favored subsidizing health care for the poor and 94% said they supported giving tax breaks to small businesses to help them provide health care benefits for their workers. A more recent poll found that most Americans were pleased with their health benefits and the costs. The possible cause of this difference is that Americans support change as long as they aren't negative impacted by that change. This is why Democratic candidates have suggested paying for their health care proposals by increasing taxes on individuals who earn more than $250,000 (Edwards says $200,000). While it may seem unfair for this income group to shoulder the costs, the middle class will probably need subsidies themselves to pay for insurance if the government passes mandates. Republican candidates reject the mandate approach and prefer to encourage the purchase of health insurance through tax breaks. McCain recommends $2,500 in tax credits for individuals while Giuliani suggests $7,500 in tax deductibles for individuals. According to Families USA, the problem with the tax break method is that most of the benefits will be felt by those in higher tax brackets who already have a larger tax burden not by those who are in more need of assistance. |
