Healthcare Industry News > Federal government rejected request to expand childrens health care coverage Federal government rejected request to expand childrens health care coveragePrior to the Christmas holidays, the Federal government rejected a request by Ohio legislators to expand their children health care coverage using Medicaid funds. The expansion would have helped families earning up to $62,000 provide health insurance for their children - it would have provided health care for approximately 20,000 children in the state.Governor Ted Strickland who had proposed the plan threatened to sue the Bush administration over the decision. In his statement, he said the decision showed the administration was "totally out of touch with the struggles faced by so many Ohio families." Jeff Nelligan, a spokesman for the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services says they tried to reach a compromise with the state. Strickland does intend to reapply and ask for a lower income limit. If approved, only about 10,000 Ohio children could be helped. Ohio's Medicaid program is already expected to face a financial shortage, however. The state had intended to spend $7.3 billion on Medicaid over the next two years, including an increase to payments to doctors and the restoration of a full dental program, but they were falling short of that budget by $207 million. Changes to some Medicaid programs may be needed to balance the state's budget. |
