Employers may be choosing Health Savings Accounts (HSAs)

Employers may be choosing Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) as a way to cut health insurance costs. The accounts allow individuals to save a portion of their income to cover their health insurance costs. Money deposited in the account earns tax-free interest. The funds can be withdrawn to cover medical expenses if needed. If not needed, the funds can continue accumulating interest year after year. The HSAs have minimum deductibles that must be met - $1,100 for individuals and $2,200 for families. Premiums for the plans are also less than with most employer-provided HMOs. Additionally, the accounts can go with the employee even if they change jobs must like a 401(l) retirement plan.

Currently, 20% of employers in the United States are offering HSAs to their employees. Most of these companies are also offering to make deposits on behalf of their workers. About 50% of companies are considering offering the accounts in the near future. Employers view the HSAs as a way to keep the soaring health insurance costs manageable for them while also being able to offer some type of medical insurance benefit to their employees.

Critics of the accounts point out that the deductibles may be too pricey for some employees and that the accounts may not be a good alternative for people with ongoing health problems.
