On October 8th, Excellus - the largest medical insurance provider in New York - began requiring pre-approval for radiology tests, including MRIs and CT scans. By requiring prior authorization, Excellus hoped to reduce its costs by $560 million. However, physicians are angry about what they view as an obstruction to their ability to diagnose and treat patients efficiently.Excellus argues they need to take these types of measures in response to employers who are having a difficult time covering the increasing costs of health insurance. Because health care costs continue to rise, those increases have to be passed on. Only by reducing expenses can the company provide some relief to their customers. Although laws were passed in the 1990s to prevent insurance providers from significantly interfering with physicians and their treatment of patients, consumers may not be on the side of the doctors in this round. With people desperate to find ways of reducing their own premiums and co-payments, they may be open to similar measures designed to control costs |
