Children Health Insurance Plans, What to Look For?

If you are a parent, then protecting the health of your child is definitely at the top of your to-do list. A big part of achieving that goal is making sure your child has the best health care you can afford. And that brings us to the all important question: children health insurance plans, what to look for?

Children Health Insurance Plans, What to Look for in Coverage

If you've done much insurance shopping, you've probably discovered that what is covered in plans varies a great deal not just from company to company but also from state to state. Some states have legal requirements about what must be covered in a plan while other states do not. That's why you should look carefully at what is included in a plan for your son or daughter before you sign on the dotted line.

One absolute must in any health insurance plan for children are vaccinations. These should be covered 100%. Some optional vaccines, such as ones for meningitis or cervical cancer, may not be covered completely but make sure you don't have to foot the entire bill. Vaccines can be surprisingly costly.

Make sure that your plan is strong on prevention. You don't want to have to wait for your child to develop some serious illness for your coverage to kick in. Instead, the purpose of insuring your child is to stop something bad from happening to him or her. You definitely want annual check-ups to be included, preferably at 100% coverage.

You should also pay close attention to the prescription policy for your children's health insurance policy. Kids often end up taking medications: antibiotics, ADD medications, allergy pills, etc. These drugs can be expensive even if you just have to pay $20 to $40 per month per prescription. Some policies don't even include prescription drug coverage, so don't take it for granted.

Children Health Insurance Plans, What to Look for in Other Areas

Obviously, an important consideration when you're comparing health plans for your children is the quality of the physicians available. Even though you can choose to see any physician you want if you opt for a PPO managed care plan, you still want to make sure that the in-network list has a large list of quality physicians who are accepting patients. Many of those providers have stopped taking new patients so make sure to call around before choosing a plan.

You may also want to look at how long your child will be covered. The plan should cover them while they are in college at least. That's one worry you don't want your son or daughter to have when they head off to higher education.

Make sure to shop around for a good children health insurance plan. Price will be a factor but don't make a decision based solely on cost. Look at all of the details first and consider working with a qualified insurance broker who can help you make sense of the different plans. At VitalOne, for example, we are here to help you determine what type of health insurance coverage is right for your children.
